Purple Tier Looming Over Shasta County

It was last Friday at the weekly Roadmap to Recovery Advisory Committee meeting that I heard about the strong possibility that the State of California would be putting Shasta County into the dreaded, most-restrictive, purple tier. It was a punch to the stomach to be sure.

outdoor seatingWhy did the State make this decision? Unlike a few short weeks ago when County representatives convinced State Public health officials to allow us to remain in the red tier, this time it was determined that the spread of COVID-19 in Shasta County is more widespread, not linked to just a few locations. That said, the number of active cases is “only” 116 as of Wednesday of this week, including those in the hospital. As I have written before, I will never take lightly the loss of even one human life as a result of the virus. However, there may be opportunity to continue to negotiate with the State to seek a variance within the purple tier designation. I asked the county health officer, Dr. Karen Ramstrom, to consider petitioning the State to remove the indoor dining restriction in the purple tier. Restaurants are the hardest hit industry in this tier and this could make a big difference for hundreds if not thousands in the restaurant industry throughout the county.
We will report back through social media channels when we learn anything more regarding this latest effort to fight for our business community.
For now, I will get back to signing more of the 370 checks going out to businesses throughout Shasta County thanks to the $3.1 million dollars in business grants committed by the Shasta County Board of Supervisors and City of Shasta Lake City Council. Reading the abundance of thank you email from grant recipients has been a moment of encouragement in what has been a very trying time for many.
As always, I am happy to address your questions. Click on the button below to send me an email. Finally, it is never too early to SHOP LOCAL and get that holiday shopping done. Retail and shopping centers will remain open indoors.
